Description:

Dayton, Ohio – The local group Dayton for Darfur will hold a benefit concert Thursday, March 6, at the Pearl Nightclub on Patterson in downtown Dayton. Musical performers will include indie rock band Records Records Records from Broad Ripple, Indiana, and local solo artist Mascot. Local spoken word artist Dave Nichols will also perform, and members of Dayton for Darfur will speak about the purpose of the benefit and show several minutes of footage relating events in Darfur. Relevant literature, merchandise, and letters and petitions will also be available. Doors will open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5, though additional donations are encouraged.

The purpose of the benefit concert is to raise funds to contribute to speaker and venue costs for a rally and march planned for April 19 and to generate interest in Dayton for Darfur’s activities. Since December 2007, Dayton for Darfur has been planning a rally and march to take place in downtown Dayton on April 19. The rally will begin at Courthouse Square. A march will then lead the rally from Courthouse Square to the Dayton Convention Center. The purpose of the rally is to educate the public about the tragedy in Darfur, to increase lobbying efforts, and to raise funds to contribute to the Save Darfur Coalition and Doctors Without Borders. The April 19 event will feature select speakers, including a refugee from Darfur and interested policy-makers. Cosponsors of the event include: Amnesty International, The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), The Dayton Circus, The Dayton International Peace Museum, Genocide Intervention Network, Ginghamsburg Church, The Jewish Community Relations Council, the Save Darfur Coalition, Save the Children, STAND (University of Dayton chapter), and Wright State University Physicians for Human Rights.
